What Is Eye Refractive Surgery/Treatment?

Refractive treatments aim to reduce dependence on glasses or contact lenses by reshaping the front of the eye (cornea) with laser, or by placing a lens inside the eye. These procedures are performed with numbing eye drops and are typically day-care procedures. Your doctor will confirm suitability after detailed eye measurements (corneal thickness/shape, tear film, prescription stability, pupil size, and retinal health).

Common vision issues treated: short-sightedness (myopia), long-sightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism.
Note: Not everyone is suitable for every procedure; the safest choice depends on your individual eye structure and needs.

Why LASIK & What Options Exist

Why consider LASIK or refractive surgery? Convenience for daily activities, freedom from fogging lenses, and the possibility of clearer unaided vision. Results and recovery differ by technique and by person.
How the technology has evolved (general overview):
PRK/TransPRK (surface laser): Earlier method; no corneal flap. Surface healing takes longer.
LASIK (microkeratome): A thin corneal flap is created with a blade; quick visual recovery for many patients.
FEMTO-LASIK (bladeless LASIK): Femtosecond laser creates the flap with high precision; cornea is reshaped with an excimer laser.
ZEISS SMILE® (small-incision): Flap-less, keyhole approach that removes a thin lenticule through a small incision.
ZEISS SMILE® PRO: Next-generation small-incision platform designed for refined tracking and patient experience.
ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens): No corneal tissue removal; a soft lens is placed inside the eye—often considered for very high prescriptions or thinner corneas.

Your clinician will recommend the approach that best aligns with your eye health, prescription, occupation/sports, and recovery goals.

Are You a Suitable Candidate?

Often suitable if you:
Are generally healthy, 18 years or older, and your glasses power has been stable
Have healthy corneas and eyes on examination.
Have realistic expectations and can follow aftercare.
May not be suitable if you:
Have certain corneal diseases (e.g., keratoconus), active eye infections/inflammation, or severely dry eyes.
Are pregnant or breastfeeding, or on medications that can affect healing.
Have unstable prescription or other medical conditions that need clearance.

The only way to confirm suitability is with a complete assessment and doctor consultation.
