👁️ Why Preparation Matters

Your child’s first eye exam is a big milestone. A bit of prep can go a long way in making it smooth and stress-free — for both of you. This checklist focuses on the before — what parents can do to make the actual day easier.

1 Week Before the Appointment

📍 Start the Conversation:
Begin with a calm, positive tone. Try saying:

  • “We’re going to a place that helps people see better.”
  • “You’ll get to look at some pictures and play some games with your eyes.”
  • “It’s not scary — and I’ll be there with you the whole time.”

Frame it like an exciting outing, not a medical check-up. Link it to something familiar, like storytime or school activities.

📍 Watch for Any Signs:
Take note if your child is rubbing their eyes often, squinting, or avoiding close-up activities like reading. Mention these to the eye care team.

📍 Explain What Will Happen:
Use simple and reassuring words:

  • “You’ll sit in a comfy chair and look at some lights and pictures.”
  • “Sometimes you’ll cover one eye, like a fun game.”
  • “There’s no pain — just looking, talking, and exploring cool tools.”

Let them know you’ll stay nearby and that it’s a chance to take care of their superhero eyes.

1 Day Before

📍 Pack Comfort Items:
Bring their favourite toy, soft blanket, or storybook to help them relax during the visit.

📍 Know Your Family History:
Be ready to mention if close family members have a history of wearing glasses, lazy eye, or other eye conditions.

📍 Confirm Clinic Details:
Double-check your appointment time, clinic address, and parking info. This helps reduce last-minute stress.

On the Day of the Exam

📍 Arriving at the Clinic:
Get there 10–15 minutes early to allow your child to get used to the space. Optimax clinics are designed with children in mind — bright, friendly, and pressure-free.

📍 Managing Wait Time:
Keep things calm by reading a book together or chatting about something fun. Avoid hyping up or over-explaining the exam.

📍 If They Get Anxious:
Stay by their side and keep your tone calm. Say things like: “Let’s just see what they show us — I’m here with you.”

📍 Encouragement Helps:
Praise their effort throughout: “You’re doing so well!” or “You’re so brave today!” Consider a small reward afterward to end on a happy note.
